“Edwin’s experience, his calmness, the reliability - that was the main thing. Like any goalkeeper, he made the odd mistake but generally he was world class.”

“Scholesy was just brilliant - how he played the game, how he was off the pitch… he was loved by everyone. None of the lads have a bad word for him. He came in, did the business and then headed off again. He had genius ability that you can’t really teach.”

“Gary, as well as being an incredible player for 10 or 15 years at that level, his influence off the pitch was massive. When I came he was the captain and he’d drive the high standards and keep players on their toes. People say he moans a lot but there was a reason he moaned - he wanted everybody to hit perfection. As a captain and off the pitch, he was immense.”

It is an agonising process because to stop playing at this club is a big thing for me. I love the club, it’s all I’ve ever known. But in some ways it becomes easier for me because I love the club that much I don’t want to become a passenger. For me to go and play at another football club just won’t happen. I won’t dilute my memories of football. I know that would happen for me. My colours are so firmly nailed to the mast at this club, for me to go and run out in a different shirt, I just wouldn’t enjoy that.

“No, I can’t have regrets. I was at the best club in the world, the club I grew up supporting, twenty minutes from where I live. It doesn’t get any better than that. I would never have left, unless the manager told me my time was up. But he never said that to me. Even at the end, I went to see him. He was always a very loyal person. If you deliver for him and you perform, he will stand by you all the way.”
“We were always very committed, we always did our best every single day. For me, I was at the best football club, and I would have never wanted to leave. Why would I? I was eating fillet steak, you don’t have a hamburger when there’s fillet steak there!”

They have something in common

Edwin Van Der Sar

Gary Neville

Paul Scholes

Martin Palermo

Marcelo Gallardo

Jesper Gronkjaer

John Dahl Tomasson

What is that they have in common?

They were players that I’ve always admired since ever! and they retired this year!
